- Appearance vs. Reality- "Fair is Foul and Foul is Fair" as the Three Witches chant at the beginning of the play, and is acted on throughout the play. Macbeth, who was at first fair and good, turns foul chasing after power. Macbeth wouldn't trust people because he thought anyone who seems fair can be foul.
- Ambition- The ambition of Lady Macbeth and Macbeth starts the onset of murder and greed, chasing after power.
- Fate vs. Free Will- The question whether it was all fate that Macbeth ended up exactly as the witches prophesied, or was it Macbeth believing in the prophesies that lead to his downfall. Did he have the power to digress from the given path?
- Power and Tyranny- This is what Macbeth chases after, and what changes Macbeth's character. Consumed in this power he turns into a murderer and evil tyrant.
